Outstanding in the Field :: The Washington Edition
Even after the first time I finally got to experience Outstanding in the Field (in Texas, where my Mister proposed), I knew I wanted to experience the event in other parts of the country - possibly the world. So, when they were coming very near where I live, I invited Mister’s cousin to go with me as a thank you for her support and kindness through the last year-ish of his life.
And I’m so glad I did.
Not only is B a foodie, she was willing to talk about and tell stories about Mark. And while I really enjoyed the event - the oysters were uh-mazing!!! - it was being able to talk about him and learn things I didn’t know with someone who loved him and knew him from a small child.
It’s a thing at OITF to bring your own plates. And I did…
They are pretty special plates because I got them in the clearance section of Antropologie for Mister and my second experience at OITF and even though I got rid of a lot of things when I moved us to a different apartment, I am so glad I kept these plates. It was another small way we infused him into this experience. And it didn’t hurt as badly as I expected it would.
I highly recommend trying this experience once in your life. It’s a great way to experience something new and the scenery has always been beautiful - a table in an outdoor setting happening before/around golden hour. Stunning.
Maybe I’m more mindful of this now, but even if you go with a group of people you know and are super comfortable with, consider striking up a conversation with those around you - you’ll meet some of the coolest people and realize that there is still a lot of loving kindness in the world.

And let me know if you’re ever planning to go and need a plus one; I am already thinking ahead about a future experience in a lovely setting with yummy food and great company.
